Service Areas

York is the White Rose City. The name came over from York in England along with the house that fought under the white rose, and Lancaster took the red one. Four centuries later the rivalry still turns up on jerseys and bar signs on both sides of the Susquehanna.

The county under that name is not one place. York City is dense and old, with rowhomes and stone-and-mortar foundations poured straight onto earth long before anyone thought to lay gravel under a slab. Cross the city line and you are in Spring Garden Township, Springettsbury Township, West Manchester Township and York Township, where most of the post-war housing sits and where a great many people with a York mailing address actually live. Keep going and you reach the boroughs, Hanover and Red Lion and Dover and Dallastown, and then the farmland, the stone farmhouses, and the additions that have been bolted onto them over a century and a half.

Radon ignores all of it. York County is EPA Radon Zone 1, the highest of the three classifications, which means the predicted average indoor screening level across the county sits above the EPA action level of 4.0 pCi/L. What the geography changes is the fix. A 1990s slab in the Weigelstown area and a fieldstone basement in the Avenues are different problems, and a quote that prices them the same was written without looking at the house.

We care about the families living in York and in the boroughs and townships around it. Every place below has its own page.
